In Their Reason, I very briefly mention that while Florida had ruled the ban on gay adoption unconstitutional (2008) and adoptions were going through, there was still verbiage on the books that could create a loophole should someone try appeal. In recent months (2016), we’ve not only seen that cleaned up, but the state is finally issuing birth certificates to include same-sex parents. Why is this important? Prior to these updated documents, children of same-sex couples were issued birth certificates that read “mother unmarried, father unknown.” The ramifications are horrendous and that it took eight years after the initial ruling to actual put this last piece of the puzzle into effect is an even greater crime.

This is just another example of why the fight didn’t end with the Supreme Court ruling or any of those more regional rulings. While Florida may have finally got it right on family recognition, it is still legal throughout the state to fire someone or deny them access to housing or accommodations because of their sexual orientation. While there are more localized non-discrimination protections in place, as well as major corporations providing the same, 47% of Floridians live in a place that doesn’t protect them.
